Rodent proofing: the step that stops them coming back

If rats or mice return every year, the house still has a way in. Rodent proofing, whether it is rat proofing a roofline or mouse proofing a kitchen, finds those gaps and closes them with materials rodents cannot chew through.

A rat can fit through a gap about the size of a 20 cent coin, and a mouse through a gap about the width of a pencil. Most Melbourne homes have dozens of openings that size: around gas, water and air conditioning pipes, under external doors, in broken sub floor vents, along roof edges and under the tiles.

Expanding foam and plastic fillers do not stop rodents. They chew straight through them, often within a night. We use stainless steel mesh, galvanised mesh, cement mortar, metal flashing, brush seals and vent covers designed for the job.

Every point we seal is photographed and listed in your report, so you can see exactly what was done and where. Proofing jobs are covered by our 6 month written warranty: if rodents get back in through a point we sealed, we come back and fix it at no charge.

Where they get in

The entry points we seal most often

These are the gaps we find on almost every Melbourne home we proof.

Pipe and cable holes

Gaps around gas, water, drainage and air conditioning lines where they enter walls.

Roof edges and tiles

Lifted tiles, ridge capping gaps, open eaves and gaps in the flashing.

Doors and garage doors

Worn seals under external doors and gaps at the sides of roller doors.

Sub floor vents

Broken or missing vent covers on brick and weatherboard homes.

Weep holes

Open weep holes in brick veneer walls that lead into the wall cavity.

Climbing routes

Vines, branches and fences that give rats a path onto the roof.

Materials

What we use and where

The right material depends on the gap and the surface around it.

Entry pointWhat we useWhy
Pipe and cable holesStainless steel mesh packed tight, then sealedRodents cannot chew through steel
Gaps in brickworkCement mortarHard, durable and matches the wall
Roof edges and flashingMetal flashing and meshCloses gaps without stopping airflow
Sub floor ventsMetal vent covers with fine meshKeeps ventilation, keeps rodents out
Weep holesPurpose made weep hole coversWater still drains out of the wall
External doorsBrush or rubber door sealsCloses the gap at the bottom of the door

We never block weep holes or sub floor ventilation solid. Walls and floors need airflow and drainage to stay dry.

Questions

Rodent Proofing Melbourne questions

Still have a question?

Talk to us directly. We will tell you honestly what the job needs and roughly what it costs.

What is rodent proofing?

Rodent proofing means finding every gap rats and mice use to get into a building and sealing it with materials they cannot chew through, such as steel mesh, mortar and metal.

Does expanding foam keep rats out?

No. Rats and mice chew through foam easily. It is fine as a filler behind steel mesh, but never on its own.

How small a gap can a rat get through?

About the size of a 20 cent coin. Mice need only a gap about the width of a pencil.

Do you need to treat the rodents first?

Yes. Sealing a building with rodents still inside traps them in. We treat first, then close the final gaps once activity has stopped.

Will proofing block ventilation?

No. We use mesh covers on vents and weep holes so air and water still move freely.

Is rodent proofing covered by a warranty?

Yes. Every point we seal is covered by our 6 month written warranty. If rodents get back in through one of them, we fix it at no charge.

How long does rodent proofing take?

Most single storey homes take half a day to a day, depending on how many points need sealing and how easy they are to reach.

Ready to get rid of the rodents?

Treatment, gaps sealed and a 6 month written warranty on sealed points.
