Mice control

Mice pest control that stops the next litter too

Mice in the house are rarely a single mouse. The house mouse breeds quickly, lives very close to food and can squeeze through a gap about the width of a pencil.

Mice are usually first noticed in the kitchen: tiny droppings in the pantry or the cutlery drawer, a chewed bag of rice, or scratching inside the wall behind the fridge or oven. Garages, laundries and the space under the dishwasher are other favourite spots, because they are warm and close to food.

Mouse control works differently from rat control. Mice travel short distances, often only a few metres from their nest, so stations and traps have to be placed close to where they live, not just around the edge of the house. We look behind and under appliances, inside kitchen kickboards, in the roof above the kitchen and in the sub floor.

Once activity is under control we seal the small gaps that let them in: around gas and water pipes, cable holes, door bottoms, weep holes and gaps in the kickboards. Sealing is the step that most do it yourself jobs skip, and it is why mice keep coming back each autumn.

Signs of mice in your home

Mice leave different clues to rats. These are the ones we look for first.

Tiny droppings

Dark droppings about the size of a grain of rice, scattered in drawers, cupboards and along benches.

Chewed packets

Small neat holes in cereal boxes, flour bags and pet food bags.

Light scratching

Faint scratching in walls or the ceiling at night, lighter and quicker than rats.

A stale smell

A musty smell in cupboards, behind the fridge or in the garage.

Shredded nests

Shredded paper, fabric or insulation tucked into a warm, hidden corner.

Grease marks

Small dark smudges where mice squeeze under doors and through gaps.

Seasonal

Why mice move into Melbourne homes in autumn and winter

As the weather cools from around March, mice that spent summer in gardens, parks and vacant land look for warmth and steady food. Houses supply both. That is why most mice control calls in Melbourne come between autumn and the end of winter.

Homes next to open paddocks, creeks, new estates under construction or industrial land often see more mice, because building work and harvests push mice out of the ground nearby.

The simplest prevention is to store dry food in sealed hard containers, keep pet food in a sealed tub, and fix gaps under external doors with a brush or rubber seal. A mouse that cannot find food or a way in moves on to an easier house.

If you have already seen droppings, act early. A pair of mice can become a sizeable family over a single season if nothing interrupts them.

How do I get rid of mice in the house?

Treat them close to where they nest, then seal the small gaps they use to get in. Without sealing, new mice keep arriving, especially in autumn and winter.

How small a gap can a mouse fit through?

A house mouse can squeeze through a gap of about 6 mm, roughly the width of a pencil. That is why we check pipe holes, weep holes and door bottoms carefully.

How long does mice control take?

Most homes see activity drop within one to two weeks. We check back to make sure the nests are no longer active.

Are mice dangerous?

Mice contaminate food and benches with urine and droppings and can carry bacteria such as salmonella. They also chew wiring and insulation. Throw away any food they have reached.

Do glue boards work for mice?

We do not recommend them. They are cruel, they catch only the odd mouse and they do nothing about the nest or the way in.

Can I smell mice in the walls?

Yes. A musty smell in a cupboard or behind an appliance is common. A strong rotting smell usually means a dead rodent, which we can trace and remove.

Is mouse control safe in a kitchen?

Yes. Stations are locked, fixed in place and kept away from food preparation areas, children and pets.

Ready to get rid of the rodents?

Treatment, gaps sealed and a 6 month written warranty on sealed points.
