Finding and removing a dead rat you can smell but not see
A dead rat smell is hard to miss: a strong, sweet rotting smell that gets worse in warm weather and is usually strongest in one room.
Rats and mice often die in hidden places: in the roof space, inside a wall cavity, under the floor, behind kitchen kickboards or inside a cupboard. This often happens after someone has put out loose bait, but it can also happen naturally.
We trace the smell using the room where it is strongest, flies gathering at a vent or cornice, stains on the ceiling and the layout of the roof and sub floor above and below. Where the rodent can be reached through the roof, the sub floor, a manhole, a vent or by removing a kickboard, we remove it, bag it and dispose of it.
We then clean the area, treat it with an odour neutraliser and tell you why it happened. If there are more rodents around, a dead rat is usually the first sign, so we check for activity and give you a price to deal with it.

How long does a dead rat smell last?
A dead rat usually smells for one to three weeks, depending on the size of the rodent, the temperature and how much air moves through the space. Mice smell for a shorter time than rats. In a warm roof in summer the smell is stronger but usually fades faster.
If the rodent cannot be reached without cutting into a wall, the options are to wait it out with odour treatment and ventilation, or to open a small section of plaster, which then needs patching. We explain both and the cost before anything is done.
Air fresheners only cover the smell. Ventilating the room, keeping the door closed and using an odour absorber help while it fades.
To stop it happening again, the rodents need to be treated with locked stations rather than loose bait, and the gaps they use need to be sealed.
While you wait
- Keep the room ventilated
- Close the door to that room
- Do not cut into walls yourself
- Wear gloves near droppings

Dead Rat Removal Melbourne questions
Talk to us directly. We will tell you honestly what the job needs and roughly what it costs.
Call 0435 072 221How do I find a dead rat in the wall?
Follow the smell to the room where it is strongest, look for flies gathering at vents, cornices or light fittings, and check for stains on the ceiling. We use the same clues plus access from the roof and sub floor.
How much does dead rat removal cost?
Dead rat removal starts from $229 including GST for a rodent that can be reached through the roof, sub floor or an accessible cavity.
How long does a dead rat smell last?
Usually one to three weeks. Removing the rodent and treating the area shortens that a lot.
Is the smell of a dead rat harmful?
The smell is unpleasant rather than dangerous, but flies and bacteria around the body are a hygiene risk. Do not handle a dead rodent with bare hands.
Do you remove other dead animals?
We remove dead rats and mice. For any other dead animal in the roof, such as a possum or bird, call us and we will tell you whether we can help.
Why did the rat die in my wall?
Usually because it ate bait somewhere and returned to its nest. That is why we use locked stations placed where rodents can be found and removed.
Can you cut into the wall to reach it?
Only with your approval. We explain the option and the cost first, and patching the plaster is a separate trade.
Ready to get rid of the rodents?
Treatment, gaps sealed and a 6 month written warranty on sealed points.
